Turkey may appoint an ambassador to Egypt in the coming months, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said, Sabah reported.

According to him, Ankara and Cairo may restore full diplomatic relations and reappoint ambassadors "in the coming months." He said Turkey and Cairo could resume diplomatic consultations led by deputy foreign ministers as part of the process of normalizing relations.

After years of tension, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan exchanged a handshake with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi in Qatar earlier this month.

The handshake and brief meeting opened the door to behind-the-scenes diplomacy between intelligence officials, Reuters reported, citing sources.

Intelligence delegations from the two countries met in Egypt over the weekend, a source in the region familiar with the situation said. A second source, a senior Turkish official, said the sides had begun "important" talks, with Turkey and Egypt set to begin talks on military, political and commercial issues, including energy projects.
