Peruvian police have detained Pedro Castillo, whom the country's parliament earlier ousted as president. The newspaper El Comercio reported this on Wednesday.

The newspaper published a photo of Castillo at the police station. According to the newspaper, he is in the capital, Lima.

Castillo had earlier announced the dissolution of parliament and the imposition of a curfew in Peru. The country's attorney general's office called the decision a violation of the constitutional order and said it planned to take "legal measures."

He made the address before a session of Congress to consider his impeachment. Lawmakers did not call off the vote and approved the head of state's resignation. The military and police voiced their support for Congress.
