Iranian authorities announced the first execution of a protester in the country, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.

Mohsen Shekari was convicted of attacking a security officer and blocking the street in Tehran. According to investigators, the man attacked the law enforcement officer with a machete and wounded him.

Earlier, an Iranian court sentenced to death five protesters in connection with the death of a vice officer. Eleven others received lengthy prison sentences.

According to Amnesty International, at least 28 people arrested for participating in the demonstrations could be executed.

International human rights organizations suspected that Iran was using the death penalty to intimidate the protesting population. According to human rights activists, more than 500 people were executed in Iran in 2022.
