The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has passed a resolution that recognizes Russia's actions against Ukraine as genocide against the Ukrainian people.

The document condemns Russia for committing acts of genocide against the people of Ukraine during the military invasion of that country, calls on the U.S. and its allies to continue supporting the Ukrainian government and conducting investigations aimed at bringing those responsible for these terrible crimes to justice, DW reports.

By his actions, Putin has demonstrated extremely clearly that his goal is to end the existence of the Ukrainian people. I have personally seen evidence of his brutality in Irpen and other areas of the Kiev region, said Republican Senator Jim Risch, one of the co-sponsors of the resolution.

Another co-sponsor, Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, expressed the view that the crimes committed against the Ukrainian people throughout Putin's illegal and unprovoked war violate countless international conventions and can only be described as genocide.

The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes in Ukraine. Russia denies that its servicemen killed civilians in Ukraine. Dissemination of information about the murders could result in criminal prosecution in Russia under the article on fakes against the Russian army.

Earlier, the parliaments of several countries, in connection with the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, declared Russia a sponsor of terrorism or a terrorist regime. A similar resolution was approved by the European Parliament. Similar documents have already been submitted to the U.S. Congress several times, but none of them has yet been passed.
