Turkey intends to seek a discount of more than 25 percent on gas imports from Russia during talks in Moscow on Friday, Dec. 9, Bloomberg reported, citing Turkish officials.

A deal with Russia could ease pressure on the lira, one of the world's worst currencies over the past year, and help President Recep Tayyip Erdogan avoid raising energy prices ahead of next year's elections.

Turkey wants the discount to apply to payments in 2023 and some previous payments made in 2022 retrospectively, officials said. If Turkey cannot secure the discount at the desired level, it will seek a deferral of payments preferably until 2024, the officials said, without going into detail.

Last year, Russia supplied just under half of the 59 billion cubic meters of gas imported by Turkey. Erdoğan said Turkey's total energy bill for 2022 could reach $100 billion, twice as much as last year.
