Peruvian congressmen voted against a constitutional reform allowing the resignation of Parliament and the current president to organize a pre-term election of the head of state, reports Andina. According to the agency, the relevant initiative was not supported by 65 out of 130 deputies and 45 parliamentarians spoke in favor of it.

As noted, the elections were proposed to postpone until December 2023 against the background of the impeachment of Peru's President Pedro Castillo, although at the end of last year, Congressmen had agreed to organize a vote in the spring of 2024. At the same time, the early voting in December was supported by the current president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, who took office after Castillo's impeachment.

According to Andina, the initiative was not accepted due to disputes among congressmen.
