Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said at a rally in Denizli province in southern Turkey that, from a legal point of view, he has the right to run for a new term as head of state, TRT reported.

The Turkish president thus responded to claims by opposition politicians that he has no right to run for a third term after Turkey's 2018 transition to a presidential form of government from a parliamentary one.

Turkey has chosen a new system of government in the 2018 elections. The timing (of presidential terms) has been zeroed out. The president elected in 2018 is the first president of the new system of government, he said.
