Vending machines selling whale meat have appeared in Japan. Kyodo Senpaku Co., a Japanese whaling operator, introduced them in the port city of Yokohama, about 20 miles from its capital, Tokyo.

This is the third vending machine the company has installed in an effort to boost sales after years of struggling to promote its products because of protests from whale conservationists.

The vending machine sells such delicacies as whale sashimi, whale bacon, whale skin and whale steak, as well as whale meat in cans. Prices range from $7.70 to $23.

In 2018, Japan stopped hunting whales in the Antarctic and resumed commercial whaling off its shores. The move appeased opponents, but they still oppose the new machines.

Nevertheless, the company plans to install vending machines in 100 locations across the country within five years.
