There are 146,424,729 people living in Russia as of January 1, 2023, the population decreased by 555,332 people during the year, RIA Novosti reported, citing preliminary data from Rosstat.

Rosstat statistics do not take into account data from four new regions of the Russian Federation - the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

As of January 1, 2022, Russia's population was 146,980,061.

According to Rosstat, the urban population in the country is almost 109.6 million people, and the rural population is about 36.8 million people.

The statistical agency takes into account the results of the last population census, to which the numbers of births and arrivals are added annually, and the numbers of deaths and departures are subtracted.
