Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will run for the Republican Party's 2024 U.S. presidential nomination on Feb. 15, opposing former President Donald Trump.

Haley is expected to release details about her nomination during a meeting with her supporters, according to local news outlet The Post and Courier, which first reported on the planned announcement.

Haley has earned a reputation in the Republican Party for her ability to address issues of gender and race in a more credible way than many of her associates, Reuters notes.

She also served as an advocate for American interests abroad, serving as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump from 2017 to 2018. During that time, the U.S. withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, which was signed under Democratic President Barack Obama and was highly unpopular with Republicans.

If Haley wins as the Republican nominee, she will become the first female presidential candidate and the first non-white candidate in the history of the Republican Party.
