About fifty Armenian trucks are waiting to pass through "Upper Lars" multilateral checkpoint on both Georgian and Russian sides, customs attaché of the Armenian Embassy in Russia Vahan Hakobyan told Sputnik Armenia.

Earlier it was reported that the road from Russia to Georgia through "Upper Lars" was closed for heavy vehicles at night. Traffic was restored after work to clear the roadway.

"Movement through Lars in both directions is allowed for all types of vehicles. But at the moment there are over 130 trucks (from 30 to 40 of them Armenian) on the Georgian side, and about 70 trucks (about 20 of them Armenian) on the Russian side," Hakobyan said.

The attache explained that queues of several kilometers do not form with such a number of vehicles. According to him, all the trucks will cross the border within a few hours.

Georgia is building a road bypass for the most avalanche-prone part (Gudauri-Kobi) of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars road. We are talking about a 9-kilometer tunnel under the Krestovy Pass. It is planned to build 22,7 km road, as well as 6 bridges and 5 tunnels. The construction is to be completed by the end of 2024.

The Georgian Military Road is currently the only overland route linking Armenia with Russia. It is periodically closed due to bad weather.
