At least ten people were killed in the southern United States as a result of a powerful ice storm, more than half a million households in four states faced power outages, U.S. media reported.

Ice, sleet and snow brought a four-day cold front to the southern states.

Although the freezing rain has now stopped in the South and Mid-South, the danger remains as melting ice can still cause trees and branches to break, the National Weather Service warned.

In addition, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in some places in the northern states.
