Heavy snowfall hit Athens and most regions of Greece, with schools closed on Monday, employees of businesses and institutions transferred to remote work, courier deliveries banned, police fined for driving cars without snow chains, and various events cancelled.

The bad weather was brought by Cyclone Barbara, residents of various regions sent an emergency alert on the emergency telephone number 112 about the heavy snowfall, urging them not to leave without an absolute necessity.

Authorities announced measures to deal with the effects of the snowfall.

Schools in snow-affected areas will switch to distance learning on Monday.

Across northern and northeastern Attica, including the northern suburbs of Athens, stores will be closed on Monday, exclusively to serve the urgent and emergency needs of the population will be able to operate until 6 p.m. Pharmacies, grocery stores and supermarkets, gas stations and stores selling tools and snow chains for cars. From 6 p.m., delivery and courier services are prohibited in these areas.

Public services and private businesses are advised to move employees to remote work, if possible.
