The death toll from a major earthquake in southeastern Turkey rose to 1,498 on Monday. Yunus Sezer, head of Turkey's Emergency Management Authority, said this on Turkish television.

"The death toll is 1,498. 8,533 of our citizens have been injured," he said.

He also added that 105 more aftershocks have occurred in the region since the first magnitude 7.7 earthquake was recorded last night.
