An eruption occurred at the Shouwa crater of the Sakurajima volcano, reported the country's chief meteorological office.

The volcano threw up columns of ash and smoke twice Wednesday morning, each about 1,000 meters high. The last eruption at this crater was seen in April 2018.

Specialists warn that volcanic rocks may fall within a 2-kilometer radius.

The greatest activity of the Syowa crater was observed from 2006 to 2018.

There were no reports of a threat to the population.
