This past January was one of the warmest in the history of monitoring in Europe, according to the European Union's Copernicus Earth Observations program.

Exceptionally warm temperatures: in Europe, January was the third warmest January on record, the report said.

Most of Europe had above-average temperatures, including the Balkans and Eastern Europe, Copernicus reported. In addition, higher temperatures were observed in the eastern United States, Canada, Mexico and western Russia.

Siberia had below-average temperatures, as did Afghanistan, Pakistan and neighboring countries, and Australia.

The organization notes that while this past January was an exceptional month, its temperatures are a sign of the effects of climate change on many regions and can be considered another warning of future extremes.
