The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey has reached 12,391, Anadolu Agency reported, citing the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of the country.

And Hurriyet daily, also citing AFAD, states that the number of injured has reached almost 63 thousand.

In the early morning of Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 occurred in Kahramanmaras Province of Turkey. As President Erdogan noted, it was the strongest quake in the country since 1939. It was followed by three dozen aftershocks, and in the middle of the day, another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 hit the area. The aftershocks in Turkey have been going on for three days now.

A seven-day nationwide mourning has been declared in the country, and a state of emergency has been declared for three months in the ten provinces affected by this natural disaster.

The earthquake also affected the governorates of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, and Tartus in Syria. According to the latest data from the Syrian Ministry of Health, more than 1,200 people have died and more than 2,000 others were injured as a result.
