At Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, the Armenian government approved the signing of a new agreement between the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee of Armenia and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the exchange of technical information and cooperation on nuclear safety.

The previous agreement had expired on March 29, 2022.

The new agreement will promote the exchange of advanced experience and knowledge on nuclear safety, and the introduction of new respective technology.

The cooperation proposed by this agreement is aimed at strengthening the regulatory nuclear infrastructure in Armenia, and developing the skills and abilities of the respective personnel, which will contribute to the extension of the operational period of nuclear plants, in the licensing stages of the construction of a new such plant in Armenia, and the implementation of safety analysis and assessment.

The scientific and technical assistance received under the agreement will contribute to physical protection, the implementation of nuclear weapons non-proliferation guarantees, the safety of radioactive materials and waste, the implementation of environmental monitoring, and the development of safety regulatory documents.
