Four people have been killed in a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Indonesia, the disaster management agency (BPBD) of Jayapura city in Papua province said.

"According to our information, the deaths of four people have been confirmed. We are still gathering information," BPBD head Asep Khalid said, as quoted by the Indonesian portal Detik.

Khalid added that the effects of the earthquake were felt throughout the city of Jayapura. Residential houses and government buildings were damaged.

The earthquake with magnitude 5.4 occurred on Thursday in the province of Papua in eastern Indonesia at 13.28 local time. Its epicenter was located 1 kilometer southwest of the provincial capital Jayapura at a depth of 10 kilometers.
