In 2022 the importance of the Armenian-Iranian relations was mentioned at the highest level, during the discussion on "Armenian-Iranian relations in the context of common interests" held on Thursday by Grigor Melkonyan, Advisor to the Department of Neighboring Countries of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

He recalled the words of spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during his meeting with Turkish President in July 2022, saying that if there is a policy of blockade of Iran-Armenia border, the Islamic Republic will oppose it. "And in a meeting with the Russian president, he said that Iran would never tolerate any policy or program that would lead to the closure of the border between Armenia and Iran," Melkonyan added.

He also recalled that in September 2022, after Azerbaijan's aggression, the Iranian president in a telephone conversation with the Armenian prime minister mentioned Khamenei's words about the unacceptability of threats to communications between Armenia and Iran and that communications should be under the sovereign control of the countries.

"A statement was also adopted in the Iranian parliament. At that time, Iran conducted a large-scale military exercise on the border with Azerbaijan, which was a signal. In addition, on September 22, 2022, in the margins of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Armenian prime minister and the Iranian president held a meeting in which the latter again pointed to the unacceptability of border changes in the region. Raisi added that the issue of Armenia's security is very important for Iran," the Foreign Ministry department's adviser said.

The official stressed that Iran's president later in Astana at a meeting with the Azerbaijani president also pointed to the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan and the unacceptability of any change of borders.

"In October 2022, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that Tehran did not allow the closure of the ancient route from Iran to Armenia," said the Armenian Foreign Ministry representative.

Grigor Melkonyan called the opening of the Iranian Consulate General in Kapan the most important event of the bilateral relations in 2022, which was attended by the Iranian Foreign Minister.
