YEREVAN. – The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution calling on the United States to rescind its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, according to Zhamanak (Time) newspaper of Armenia.

“[A total of] 128 countries, including Armenia [and Turkey], voted for the resolution.

“Armenia’s ‘for’ vote to this resolution was predictable for several reasons. First, it was clear that the US will be in the minority in any case, and Armenia, most likely, preferred to be in solidarity with the international community.

“Besides, there is the matter of protecting the property belonging to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem of the Armenian Apostolic Church. And despite Israel’s public assurances, the church argues that it feels safer under the rule of Palestine.

“On the other hand, Armenia has followed Russia’s example in all principal votes of the UN,” wrote Zhamanak.

On December 6, US President Donald Trump stated, that he recognizes Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel, and said the US Department of State has been ordered to start transferring the US embassy in Israel, from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

But this decision has brought about worldwide reaction.
