YEREVAN. – Zhoghovurd daily of Armenia writes: By a decision of the committee to prevent the spread of coronavirus and the approval of the government, land communication with the Islamic Republic of Iran has been suspended for two weeks.

Of course, it is very important to carry out preventive work, but we also need to understand what economic damage can be caused by this government decision.

As it is known, the majority of Iranians prefer to celebrate Nowruz in Armenia, for this purpose Iranians come to Armenia from March 15, and stay until April 4.

Zhoghovurd daily spoke on this topic with tourism specialist Mekhak Apresyan, who provided us with some numerical data: “During 2017, about 220,000 Iranian citizens arrived in Armenia. However, this figure dropped to about 160,000 in 2018. In 2019, 160,000 Iranian tourists have also arrived in Armenia.”

However, the Ministry of Economy reports that it is not necessary to go ahead of time in order to make certain predictions. "Since the regulation has a two-week period—that is, it is temporary—it is not considered the most active season for tourists visiting Iran from Armenia; so we do not expect much damage in this period," said Anna Ohanyan, spokesperson for the Minister [of Economy].
