In recent days, clashes between the Sudanese army and armed groups have resumed in El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur State.

According to the UN, at least 27 people were killed and about 130 were injured in one day during these clashes.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat, eyewitnesses have reported airstrikes,  as well as artillery and machine gun fire. During the hours-long battles, about 850 people were forced to leave their homes.

Since April last year, Sudan has been in a devastating war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF has captured four of Darfur's five state capitals. The region is the size of France and is home to about a quarter of Sudan's population. El Fasher is the last major city in Darfur not under paramilitary control. The international community, including the United Nations and the United States, had been warning for weeks about a possible attack on the city.
