A five-day mourning has been declared in Iran in connection with the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and the people accompanying him, the Supreme Leader of the country, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, stated on Monday.

"I hereby declare five days of public mourning and offer my condolences to the dear Iranian nation," Khamenei stated, in particular, reports Tasnim News agency.

Also, he emphasized that according to Article 131 of the Iranian constitution, Vice President Mohammad Mokhber "will assume the position of head of the Executive Branch and is obliged to cooperate with the heads of the Legislative and Judicial Branches in facilitating the election of a new president within a period that is not to exceed 50 days."

President Ebrahim Raisi and several other Iranian officials were killed in a helicopter crash Sunday evening.
