YEREVAN. – Border department of Russia's Federal Security Service in Armenia has clarified the rumors about the arrest of an offender on the Armenian-Turkish border.

The statement released by the department said two locals noticed an unknown person moving toward the border near Artashat. 

As members of a voluntary national guard protecting the border, the villagers made steps to arrest the offender and informed border guards who arrived at the site several minutes later.

The inspection of the area revealed that the arrested person has crossed the Aras River by swimming. A black bag with personal belongings of the detainee was found on the bank.

The offender is Farid Emami Satara, a national of Afghanistan born in 1988. According to him, he intended to illegally cross the border from Iran to Turkey to meet with a family who lives in the city of Van.

The detainee was handed over to the officers of Armenia's National Security Service.
