YEREVAN. – There is no need to change the current Constitution of Armenia.

Opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) member, economist Vahagn Khachatryan, said the aforementioned at a press conference on Friday.

“This [new] Constitution will not solve our problems, but further complicate them,” noted Khachatryan. “This Constitution will be in the interests of neither the [Armenian] state nor the citizens.”

In the ANC member’s words, under the proposed constitutional draft, the incumbent authorities are attempting to reproduce their power.

“In fact, this is so,” added Vahagn Khachatryan. “It’s wrong to call this [constitutional] amendments; this is a constitutional coup.”

The new draft Constitution of Armenia is debated in the National Assembly. Pursuant to this draft, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
