Chinese shipbuilders have launched the world’s first ultra-large oil tanker powered by methanol, the Kaito, reports China Central Television (CCTV).

The 333-meter-long ship can carry about 2.1 million barrels of crude oil.

It operates with a dual-fuel engine and a methanol supply system, which enables carbon dioxide emissions to be reduced by 92% and sulfur oxide emissions by 99% compared with conventional fuel oil use.

The tanker is equipped with an “intelligent” platform that optimizes the management of liquid cargoes, the operation of the engine room, and technical maintenance, significantly improving the vessel’s economization, efficiency, and safety.

The ship will operate on the Middle East-Far East route.
