Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova has won the presidential runoff elections in North Macedonia, and will become the first female president of that country.

After almost all the ballots were counted, Siljanovska-Davkova got 65.1 percent of the votes, while her rival, incumbent President Stevo Pendarovski, received 29.3 percent.

"Is there a bigger change than the election of a woman as president? Together with [other] women, I will take a bigger step forward, a step in the direction of reforms," said Siljanovska-Davkova, speaking in front of her supporters.

She is 68 years old, a law professor, was nominated by the conservative opposition Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE).

That party is the core of the Your Macedonia political alliance comprising a 22-party coalition, and won the parliamentary elections, which took place at the same time as the presidential elections, garnering 43.2 percent of the votes.

In recent years, North Macedonians are disappointed with their country's approach to the European Union, the slow progress of their economy, and the unsuccessful fight against corruption.
