The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim Khan, said Monday that he had requested arrest warrants for three leaders of Hamas and for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel for war crimes and crimes against humanity in relation to the Oct. 7 attack and the war in Gaza, reports The New York Times.

In a statement, Khan said he was applying for arrest warrants for Yahya Sinwar, Muhammad Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas. He also said he was requesting warrants for Netanyahu and for Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant.

The prosecutor's statement said that Netanyahu and Gallant are criminally responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip at least since October 8, 2023.

According to the ICC prosecutor, the leaders of Israel are responsible for hunger, suffering, murders, attacks, destruction, persecutions, and other inhuman actions against the civilian population.

Also, according to the ICC prosecutor's statement, the investigation has grounds to believe that the three leaders of Hamas are criminally responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Israel and Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Among the accusations brought against the aforesaid Hamas leaders are murders, hostage taking, sexual violence, torture, and cruel treatment of captives. All three leaders of Hamas, the prosecutor said, are responsible for the killing of hundreds of Israelis as a result of the terrorist attacks of this group on October 7, 2023

The prosecutor's requests shall be considered by the judges of the ICC.

Israel does not recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC in the case when Palestine is a member of the ICC; that is, the 124 countries that have signed the Rome Statute.
