US stock indexes declined as a result of Tuesday's trading.
The market value of artificial intelligence (AI) companies fell sharply on news that OpenAI is failing to meet its own revenue and user acquisition targets. The company dismissed the reports as “clickbait,” saying it was seeing increased demand from businesses and advertisers, but that didn’t help matters.
OpenAI’s assurances failed to sway investors, who are still worried that the huge spending on AI infrastructure may simply not pay off.
As a result of the trading, the capitalization of Amazon.com Inc. decreased by 0.5%, Meta by 1.1%, Nvidia Corp. by 1.6%, and Oracle Corp. by 4.1%. Some other tech companies also recorded a decline: Super Micro by 2.2%, CoreWeave by 5.8%, Advanced Micro Devices by 3.4%, Broadcom by 4.4%, and Micron by 3.9%. Against this background, only Microsoft Corp. managed to increase its market value by 1%.
Along with the rise in oil prices, shares of energy giants also grew: Marathon Petroleum rose 2.4%, Exxon Mobil 1.6%, Chevron Corp. 1.9%, Devon Energy 2.7%, Occidental Petroleum 2.3%, and ConocoPhillips 2.2%.
But UPS shares fell 4%. The world's largest delivery service reported a decline in first-quarter figures: net profit fell 29%, and revenue fell 1.6%.
Coca-Cola Co.'s market value rose 3.9%. The world's largest soft drink maker increased net profit by 18% and revenue by 12% in January-March. Moreover, both adjusted profit and revenue exceeded market expectations. The company improved its annual profit forecast, too.
T-Mobile shares rose 2.2% on news that the mobile operator plans to create two strategic joint ventures in the fiber-optic communications sector and invest 2.7 billion euros in them.
The US Federal Reserve on Tuesday began a two-day meeting, which will be the last for Jerome Powell as head of this regulatory body. Market participants are inclined to believe that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index fell 0.05% to 49,141.93 points in Tuesday's trading.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.49% to 7,138.80 points.
The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 0.90% of its value and ended the day at 24,663.80 points.
