French President Emmanuel Macron stated, during a toast at a state dinner organized within the framework of his state visit to Armenia, that France considered it its duty and will continue to consider it its duty to stand with Armenia, guided by the principle of justice, Armenpress reports.

Macron thanked Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his assessments, also referring to the events of the fall of 2022 and the difficult situation in the region. “At that moment, I think that France fulfilled its duty.

Many in Europe and elsewhere were looking at us, not understanding why we were supporting Armenia so much. But we were by your side because it was fair, simply because it was fair,” the French president noted.

He emphasized that Armenia has repeatedly fought throughout history to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that this struggle was just. “It was necessary for us [i.e. France] to be on the side of that just struggle so that international law would be respected,” Macron said, noting that France had demonstrated such a position regardless of political or economic calculations.

The French president touched also upon the deep historical roots of Armenian-French relations, emphasizing the civilizational connection between the two peoples. According to him, France has always attached importance to supporting the Armenian people, starting from times of historical crises to the present day. Macron noted that it was an honor for France to host Armenian immigrants and emphasized their contribution to French society, mentioning, in particular, the role of Missak Manouchian and his wife Melinee Manouchian.

The French president attached importance also to the development path chosen by Armenia, characterizing it as a choice of peace, stability, and European values. “The choice you [i.e. Armenia] have made—the choice of peace, stability, Europe, and prosperity—we [i.e. France] find fair and right for your country,” he noted. Macron said that the signing of the planned strategic partnership agreement between Armenia and France will open a new chapter in bilateral relations, strengthening cooperation in various fields, including education and culture. “We want to build this history with you,” the French president emphasized.

Also, he lauded the courage of Armenia’s leadership in choosing the path of peace. “It takes great courage to have such peace. And today, Europe must also extend a hand to you,” Macron said. At the end of his speech, the French President proposed raising a glass to the age-old Armenian-French friendship and the further development of cooperation between the two countries.
