The European Union (EU) hopes to tear Armenia away from a reliable security system and stable economic ties, hiding behind the beautiful slogans of “deepening partnership,” “support for reforms,” “support for democracy.” The Department of Information and Press of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) told this to Izvestia.

“We have already spoken many times about the real goals of Brussels in the South Caucasus and towards Armenia. Behind the beautiful slogans of ‘deepening partnership,’ ‘support for reforms,’ ‘support for democracy’ lies a completely pragmatic calculation: to tear the republic away from a reliable security system and stable economic ties. Moreover, no clear alternative is offered to the tools that have ensured the country’s stability for decades,” the Russian MFA stated.

European officials admit that Armenia’s path to hypothetical EU membership is no less than a decade long, and there are no guarantees of the final outcome. Meanwhile, EU candidate countries are quickly becoming dependent on political will, the Russian MFA noted.

The Russian diplomats added that Armenia remains Russia’s ally, a full member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

“However, we cannot turn a blind eye to moves that essentially contradict its commitments, both bilaterally and within the framework of general multilateral formats. We hope that the Armenian leadership will not adapt to foreign geopolitical games, but will prioritize the long-term national interests of the republic itself.

We believe that Yerevan will not allow EU representatives to use the interest of our Armenian allies in expanding foreign economic ties to harm the established political, historical, humanitarian, and economic ties," the Russian MFA concluded.
