Armenia’s authorities, state institutions, the Central Electoral Commission, regional and precinct election commissions have all the necessary knowledge and means to hold free and fair elections. Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Armenia, told this to reporters during Sunday’s parliamentary elections in the country.

This is the moment when the citizens of Armenia decide who will govern them. And this is an extremely important moment for any democracy. Therefore, the EU expects all institutions to work properly to ensure that the will of the Armenian people is reflected in everything that we will see in today's process, the European diplomat added.

According to him, the EU supports Armenia and its institutions, but does not support any specific party.

It is not the EU, but the Armenian people that chooses who will govern this democratic country. So today, the decision will be made by the citizens of Armenia. And they should continue to exercise their rights as members of civil society to monitor the activities of the government, regardless of who is elected, Maragos said.

So, this is the moment when the Armenian citizens must decide who they want to see in power and what kind of policies they want to implement. The EU a partner of the Armenian people, and it is here to support any choice that the citizens of Armenia will make today, he added.

The EU also has the interest of the citizens of Armenia in a good partnership with the EU, so that the latter can continue to support it, its resilience, policies, diversification, as well as peace and normalization of relations in the region, the EU ambassador said.

There was a recent summit in Yerevan, and the EU wants to continue working on all the matters discussed there. But ultimately, it is the Armenian people who decide what kind of policies and what format of cooperation with the European Union they want to see, Maragos concluded.
