YEREVAN. – Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan voted, during Sundays National Assembly elections, at capital Yerevan’s Central 9/11 Precinct. He was accompanied by First lady, Rita Sargsyan.

Serzh Sargsyan is also chairman of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia which, in line with most recent surveys, is the leader of the electoral campaign.  

“Naturally, I voted for Armenia’s progress. I wish so that everything would be calm, peaceful, [that] everything transpires lawfully, today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow,” the President told news reporters.     

Also, President Sargsyan thanked the media for allowing the political parties to present their election programs, Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter informs from on location.

The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is a ruling conservative party in Armenia, founded on 2 April, 1990, and registered on 14 May, 1991, being the first officially registered sociopolitical organization in the independent Republic of Armenia.

The founder of the party was Ashot Navasardyan. After his death the party was headed by former Prime Minister, very influential political figure, Vazgen Sargsyan, who was killed in the 1999 terrorist attack at the parliament. He was replaced by another Premier, Andranik Margaryan. After Margaryan’s death, the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan took the office of the RPA Board Chairman.

Since 2003, the Republican Party is a core member of the ruling coalition, along with the Prosperous Armenia and Orinats Yerkir parties. RPA has majority of the parliamentary seats since 2003.

The Republican Party of Armenia runs in Sunday’s parliamentary elections under its new slogan: “Let us believe to change!”

The Party’s proportional list includes 253 names.

RPA has also nominated MP candidates with the majority election system in 33 constituencies.
