YEREVAN. – Armenian capital Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan cast his ballot during Sunday’s National Assembly election.

Margaryan is a member in the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, and he is fourth in the Party’s proportional list.  

At his election precinct, the Mayor was allowed to vote without waiting in line, but he waited for his turn during registration and waited in line after an elderly woman, Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter informs from on location.   

“I cast my ballot in the name of a better future for our country. These elections will become the elections for stability, positive changes for our citizens,” Yerevan Mayor noted. 

The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is a ruling conservative party in Armenia, founded on 2 April, 1990, and registered on 14 May, 1991, being the first officially registered sociopolitical organization in the independent Republic of Armenia.

The founder of the party was Ashot Navasardyan. After his death the party was headed by former Prime Minister, very influential political figure, Vazgen Sargsyan, who was killed in the 1999 terrorist attack at the parliament. He was replaced by another Premier, Andranik Margaryan. After Margaryan’s death, the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan took the office of the RPA Board Chairman.

Since 2003, the Republican Party is a core member of the ruling coalition, along with the Prosperous Armenia and Orinats Yerkir parties. RPA has majority of the parliamentary seats since 2003.

The Republican Party of Armenia runs in Sunday’s parliamentary elections under its new slogan: “Let us believe to change!”

The Party’s proportional list includes 253 names.

RPA has also nominated MP candidates with the majority election system in 33 constituencies.
