YEREVAN. – Unlike certain hotheads, the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) will do everything so that normal political elections are held in our country, RPA parliamentary faction secretary Gagik Melikyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.  

“I appraise as positive and operative the course of the [parliamentary] elections [on Sunday] and the actions by the competent agencies. We saw that numerous calls concerning election violations are bogus,” Melikyan noted.       

“With respect to the political forces’ pretentious—and sometimes hysterical—statements, I call upon them to think about the election violations publicized about themselves, and see to it they do not commit violations. Unlike certain hotheads, the RPA will do everything so that normal political elections are held in our country,” Melikyan said.

According to him, “no one more than the RPA is interested so that the elections are conducted freely and transparently.”

The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is a ruling conservative party in Armenia, founded on 2 April, 1990, and registered on 14 May, 1991, being the first officially registered sociopolitical organization in the independent Republic of Armenia.

The founder of the party was Ashot Navasardyan. After his death the party was headed by former Prime Minister, very influential political figure, Vazgen Sargsyan, who was killed in the 1999 terrorist attack at the parliament. He was replaced by another Premier, Andranik Margaryan. After Margaryan’s death, the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan took the office of the RPA Board Chairman.

Since 2003, the Republican Party is a core member of the ruling coalition, along with the Prosperous Armenia and Orinats Yerkir parties. RPA has majority of the parliamentary seats since 2003.

The Republican Party of Armenia runs in Sunday’s parliamentary elections under its new slogan: “Let us believe to change!”

The Party’s proportional list includes 253 names.

RPA has also nominated MP candidates with the majority election system in 33 constituencies.
