The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Keir Starmer, has announced his resignation.
"I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," Starmer said in a speech at 10 Downing Street in London, the official residence and office of the UK prime minister.
Around a hundred Labour Party MPs had urged him to take the decision after the party's defeat in local elections in May. Their number increased after Starmer's opponent, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, entered parliament on Friday to remove the UK prime minister from office.
