One person was killed and eight others injured after a stampede broke out at a large gathering of football fans in central Amman, the capital of Jordan, early Tuesday morning.
The fans were watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Jordan and Algeria, Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said, the Jordan News Agency reports.
The incident took place in Hashemite Square, where a large crowd had gathered to watch the Jordan vs. Algeria match, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Jordan.
Emergency services took nine injured people to hospital after the large crowd and chaotic movement in the square led to a stampede.
One of the victims later died, while the others suffered minor to moderate injuries.
