The issue of “Western Azerbaijanis’” return to their native lands should become part of discussions within the framework of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, since without the restoration of this right it will be difficult to talk about long-term and stable peace in the region. Chairman of the council of the so called "Western Azerbaijan community," Aziz Alakbarli, stated this during an event titled “Return to Western Azerbaijan: Restoration of Historical Justice and Human Rights,” according to Azerbaijani media.

“The [‘Western Azerbaijan’] community, based on international law, demands that international organizations and the international community recognize and ensure the rights of these people. Currently, Azerbaijan and Armenia are conducting peace talks. We believe that the issue of the return of refugees from Western Azerbaijan should also be clarified within the framework of these talks. The leadership of Armenia must come to understand that it is obligated to take into account the new realities that have formed in the region.

The Western Azerbaijan community stands for peace, security, and regional cooperation. We support peaceful negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. At the same time, we believe that the leadership of Armenia should recognize the right of Western Azerbaijanis to return to their homes and not hinder this process,” Alakbarli stated.

In turn, Azerbaijani MP Rizvan Nabiyev told reporters that “the issue of the return of Western Azerbaijanis to their historical lands is already being promoted in the legal sphere and is reflected in the documents disseminated and adopted at international forums.”
