The May 9 celebration connects a number generations, Nagorno-Karabakh Republic National Assembly (NKR NA) Speaker Ashot Ghulyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am. 

“Ever since 1992, this day became a triple celebration for us, and it harmoniously links several generations and becomes a symbol of triumphs and devotion to the Motherland,” Ghulyan noted.  

In his words, May 9, 1992 became an important milestone for the NKR’s establishment and its Defense Army’s formation. The liberation of the City of Shushi and the formation of the NKR Defense Army became an important basis for continuing the efforts toward strengthening statehood, and the objective of these efforts is the achieving of NKR’s international recognition, Ashot Ghulyan said.

NKR NA Speaker also expressed a conviction that May 9 is a celebration for all Armenians and friends of the Armenian people alike. 

To note, more than 600,000 Armenians fought at the front during the Great Patriotic War in World War II.

And 20 years ago, on May 9, 1992, the Armenian City of Shushi was liberated. During the war unleashed by Azerbaijan, Shushi was turned into an Azerbaijani military stronghold.
