Massive strikes carried out by the U.S. military against Iran overnight into July 8 were the largest since the ceasefire was concluded in April, Al Jazeera reported in its analysis of the U.S. military operation.

At this point, the channel knows that at least three cities and numerous facilities within them were struck by U.S. forces overnight. Qeshm Island was one of the main targets. At least seven facilities were hit there. The city of Sirik, located on the coast of the Strait of Hormuz, was also struck, with six facilities attacked near it. According to the channel, 10 facilities were hit in the port of Bandar Abbas, including telecommunications towers.

U.S. Central Command in the Middle East (CENTCOM) previously said that American forces had “struck more than 80 targets with precision-guided munitions in an immediate response to recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”

“U.S. forces struck Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar stations, anti-ship missile systems, and more than 60 small boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in and near the Strait of Hormuz to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international commerce passing through the international trade corridor,” CENTCOM said.

Axios, citing a U.S. official, reported that the strikes by the U.S. armed forces on Iranian facilities in the Strait of Hormuz area overnight into Wednesday were four to five times larger in scale than those carried out 10 days earlier.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced Iran’s military response, saying that the Iranian navy and air force conducted a joint operation using ballistic missiles and drones to strike 85 targets at U.S. military bases in the Persian Gulf area. The IRGC claims that the retaliatory strikes specifically targeted the base of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet in Bahrain and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait. In addition, the IRGC claims that air defense systems shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone in southern Iran.
