The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran said it had intercepted a US MQM-170 reconnaissance drone and shot down another MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, Mehr News Agency reports.

According to the Iranian side, both incidents occurred in the Persian Gulf.

As per the IRGC statement, the MQM-170 drone was intercepted west of the Strait of Hormuz during an offensive electronic warfare operation. The Iranian military claims that it managed to bring the device down almost unharmed.

According to the IRGC, this drone was conducting a reconnaissance mission, collecting information about Iranian air defense systems located in the coastal zone of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Specialists of the IRGC Navy studied the data extracted from the device and found that it had taken off from the coast of one of the southern countries of the Persian Gulf. However, the Iranian side did not specify which country it was.

The IRGC reported also the capture and destruction of an American MQ-1 drone over the skies of the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz. According to the respective statement, this device was shot down by a new, ultra-modern air defense system, which has replenished the arsenal of the IRGC Aerospace Forces.

The Iranian military said this incident was the 14th case of the destruction of an American drone.
