US President Donald Trump said that Washington agreed to refrain from striking the Iranian leadership during the week-long funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, at Tehran's request, but later Iran, he said, resumed missile attacks.

"They [i.e. Iran] asked for a timeout, they wanted to go to the funeral of Khamenei, and I said, ‘Give it to them,’ and they start shooting missiles," Trump said during a press conference in Ankara. At the same time, he noted that Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the war as a result of US and Israeli strikes, adding: "Now we did kill him, so I guess you have to look at it that way."

Also, Trump said that Iran had asked the US not to kill members of the Iranian leadership during mourning ceremonies, and Washington, according to him, agreed to this. The US president stated that he was dissatisfied with Iran's actions, accusing Tehran of escalating the conflict.

At the same time, he emphasized that he did not seek regime change in Iran, but did not want the country to obtain nuclear weapons. In addition, Trump expressed doubts that a possible future agreement with Iran would be preserved, because he believes the Iranian officials are very dishonest.

According to the US president, Washington's goal is the denuclearization of Iran. Trump stated that he was dissatisfied with the actions of the Iranian negotiating team, accusing them of lying about the content of the closed talks. Donald Trump added that the US could achieve this goal without concluding a new agreement, because, in his opinion, it could be easier.
