The European Union has approved the allocation of €120 million to support Moldova’s Armed Forces. The funds will be provided through the European Peace Facility and directed toward developing the country’s air defense capabilities, according to a statement by the Council of the EU.

As specified, the financing will allow Chișinău to acquire medium-range air defense systems. Brussels said the assistance is intended to enhance the defense potential of the Moldovan army.

Earlier, the European Commission reported that Moldova is among the largest recipients of funding from the European Peace Facility. By June, the volume of support allocated to Chișinău had reached €197 million.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that the EU supports Moldova in connection with the reforms being carried out and the country’s aspiration for closer integration with the European space.

In addition to military assistance, Moldova received about €504 million under the EU Growth Plan. Another €232.7 million in investment is planned to be directed toward infrastructure development, including the reconstruction of the Porumbrei–Comrat road.

Earlier, the European Union officially began accession negotiations with Moldova.
