Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has signed an amendment to the Constitution adopted by parliament at the initiative of Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s ruling Tisza party, which will bring his tenure as head of state to an end. Sulyok announced this in a video address on Facebook.

In the video published on Facebook, the outgoing head of state said that he had considered his options in this case and had decided to “fulfill my obligations enshrined in the Fundamental Law, after carefully weighing my legal options and my conscience.”

At the same time, he disagreed with parliament’s decision and suggested that this amendment “will join the ranks of those violent ‘Gordian knots’ that will remain for posterity as grave and shameful historical examples of the abuse of political power.” He concluded his speech by saying that the country’s president ceases to be “any kind of restraining or balancing factor,” DW reports.

“Those who stand firm in their faith and truth are not inclined to violence, do not insult, and do not humiliate the dignity of others. I believe that remaining human and humane, true to oneself and to the truth, despite all attacks and under any circumstances, is the only path worth choosing. Let us value everything that unites us! Let us love Hungary!” concluded the ally of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Magyar demanded that the President of Hungary resign no later than July 18
