British engineer Steven Wallis has once again rewritten the history of radio-controlled cars. His new model, Mach Reaper, broke the 400 km/h barrier twice, updating his own world record in less than two weeks and becoming the fastest radio-controlled car on the planet.
Project 250, which the engineer worked on for eight months, was aimed specifically at conquering the psychological 400 km/h mark. During official runs organized by the Radio Operated Scale Speed Association (ROSSA) at Llanbedr Airfield in North Wales, the Mach Reaper recorded an official speed of 403.4 km/h, while GPS registered a top speed of 405.1 km/h.
However, just two weeks later, at the Yes Mate Speed Event held on the same runway, Wallis improved the result again: according to GPS data, his car accelerated to 412.7 km/h.
Mach Reaper has long since ceased to be just an ordinary model for radio-control enthusiasts. In essence, it is a miniature technology demonstrator created according to the same engineering principles as modern aircraft. Virtually every part of the car was developed from scratch using computer-aided design systems and computational fluid dynamics methods, which are used to model airflow around full-size cars and airplanes.
As a result, the engineer succeeded in creating a completely original four-motor electric powertrain assembled from custom-made mechanical components and his own electronics.
