U.S. President Donald Trump said that in a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, he demanded more active measures to bring the country’s wildfires under control, the smoke from which had earlier blanketed a number of major U.S. cities. The American leader also did not rule out seeking compensation from Ottawa.

“I told him, ‘You should stop the spread of these fires that are poisoning our air. Our air is poisoned,’” the American leader said on July 19, answering reporters’ questions at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington about his conversation with Carney. “These fires need to be stopped. If we can help them, we will,” Trump added. “But maybe they should pay us some compensation or something like that. Or maybe we should impose some tariffs,” he emphasized.
