At the UN General Assembly session in September, the United States will seek the adoption of a declaration “on freedom of expression” that is indirectly aimed against EU regulation in the area of monitoring online platforms. Politico reported this.

As the publication recalls, the current US administration has repeatedly criticized the rules for moderating online platforms adopted in other countries. Countries signing the declaration “undertake to recognize” that penalties for “alleged disinformation and hate speech” may jeopardize freedom of expression. The exception is “content directly inciting violence.” The document is also intended to shield online platforms from government demands to monitor and remove content, Politico writes.

As the publication notes, US technology companies often complain about the costs and obligations associated with complying with requirements for operating in the EU. It is unknown whether the companies took part in drafting the document.
