The US and China will hold talks on artificial intelligence issues in September. Five sources familiar with the matter told Reuters this, as the rival superpowers seek to minimize the risks posed by each other’s increasingly powerful advanced AI models.

The AI talks, which became one of the key outcomes of the Trump-Xi Jinping summit in May, will most likely take place before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the United States on September 24, the sources said. However, the final dates have not yet been approved.

As economic, political, and military rivals, China and the US are growing increasingly concerned about each other’s AI capabilities amid the accelerating global technology race.

Beijing and Washington are assessing ways to regulate advanced AI models that could enhance military capabilities, enable cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, and destabilize labor markets.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead the September talks on the American side, four sources clarified.

The composition of the other participants from the US and China, as well as the agenda and venue of the meetings, are still under discussion, as preparations are at an early stage.
