Democrats plan to revise several areas of US foreign policy and curb the powers of President Donald Trump after gaining control of both chambers of Congress, Reuters reported on November 4.

Support for Israel among Democrats has fallen sharply because of its actions in the war in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Democrats could restrict or end military aid to Israel, which includes a baseline commitment of $3.8 billion annually, the report said.

The party also intends to push for a new aid package for Ukraine. Control of both chambers would allow Democrats to determine which bills are brought to a vote.

Another area of focus will be policy toward Iran. Democrats could seek to require Trump to obtain congressional approval for further military action, including by threatening cuts to defense spending and blocking appointments.

The other two areas are limiting growth in the military budget, restoring foreign aid cut by the Trump administration, and strengthening congressional oversight of Washington’s policy in Latin America. In particular, Democrats plan to seek reviews of US actions in Venezuela and oppose sanctions against Cuba.
